I am an avid reader. I love to read to learn more about a topic myself. I am one of those people who loves to own a book in hardcopy – I don’t like Kindle style reading and I prefer not to listen to someone else reading it to me. I love being able to laugh and ponder the words on a page. Listed below are some of my favourites and go-to guides specific to Permaculture, Regenerative Agriculture and much more. It is the culmination of thousands of hours of reading and research.
Using quotes from well known authors and creative thinkers to set the stage for each chapter she cleverly builds the imagery so it can be seen with the minds eye as clear as if you were looking at it in person. Some concepts required stopping to think or research further but overall, so well written was this book it left me wanting more knowledge and more of Nicole’s writing style. This book now takes pride of place on my bookshelf. Every farmer, gardener, and nature lover needs to read this book! Every library should have more than one copy and our educators should be teaching this to school students around the globe. In fact, I personally think that this book should be under every Christmas tree in the country this year. So important is the message.
Gabe Browns Dirt to Soil was for me my first Regenerative Agriculture Book and remains on the shelf to use as a resource and reference when I need to kick myself into gear. This is a must-read for the farmers in us all.
If you read nothing else on this page you must read this. Charles Massy has crafted this beautiful book to show us not only how he turned his farm around but how you and everyone can do the same to produce a New Earth.
Allan Savoury is well known for his Holistic Grazing and common sense restoration methods. If you are working with animals then this is a must read. From the African Savana to Coastal Australia this management applies everywhere and is the number 1 easiest way to restore soil.
While not specifically about permaculture or gardening this book by Anne Raser-Rowland and Adam Grubb is a fun and lighthearted approach to enjoying life while keeping the pennies in mind. Well worth the read.
Toby Hemenway Provides a well written and easy to follow guide to putting permaculture into practice in your garden. This was one of the first books I bought to get started on my journey into Permaculture.
Yet another offering from Anna Raser-Rowland and Adam Grubb. This little book is a gem for learning how to forage food from your local area. A must have for gardeners and those seeking to be more self sufficient.
Rowe Morrow is an amazing teacher and long time permie. Her writing here has come from years and years of experience. I am hoping to learn more from her in person in the near future This book is one of my favourites.
While not the cheapest book I have ever purchased it is definitely the most valuable. Bill Mollison co-originator of Permaculture wrote this Bible back in the 1980’s and it is still the most comprehensive writing on Permaculture Design.
I did a course with these guys a while back and they are absolutely amazing. I have not purchased this book myself yet but it is definately on my list of must haves. Nick and Kirsten have a very relatable and fun style.
Practical Permaculture is one of those books you can pickup and put down time and again. A great easy to use resource.
David Holmgren is the other Co-Originator of Permaculture. His offering here is a much more in-depth and academic look at the principles behind Permaculture.
Wild and Natural is how I would describe Sandor Katz and his book. If you have ever wanted to dabble in fermenting your food – this is the best of the best.
My favourite Preserving Book hands down. This will really get you thinking.
Sadly this book is no longer in print. But if you see it in a book store or a garage sale – Grab it. Oh it is written in Spanish so you may need to get creative with google translator if you don’t speak the language. But it is one of my all time favourites. Mine is a little worn.
This list of books is by no means exhaustive and certainly is likely to be added to as time goes by. So check back occasionally to see if we have found some new favourites.
