8 ways to prepare for a Pandemic

Respiratory Etiquette

With the worldwide outbreak of Corona Virus (Covid 19) there has been news of panic buying in all countries. Toilet paper, handwash and respiratory masks are flying off the shelves. Governments around the globe are desperately trying to halt the progression of this disease. Some are using common sense methods of information gathering and testing while others seem to be happy to shut the gate after the horse has bolted so to speak.

The Australian Government has gathered together their experts and Attorney-General Christian Porter has told the ABC that Control Orders may be used. What does all this mean? What do we need to do to stay safe? What if things get worse?

The emergency response plan, according to the ABC, outlines responses to three levels of outbreak severity — low, moderate and high.

Under the plan, a worst-case scenario outbreak would see:

Large gatherings cancelled

People having to work from home

Mortuary services prioritised

Aged care homes locked down

Childcare centers closed

So what can we do to prepare?

  • Don’t Panic. There is no need to panic, be concerned and informed.
  • Ensure you have enough of your prescription medication on hand to last you for a minimum of 4 weeks.
  • Have a small amount of basic extra medications such as panadol, cough syrup etc.
  • Ensure you have enough food items in the cupboard to last you and your family 4 weeks.
  • Provide simple instruction to children about handwashing and respiratory etiquette.
  • Carry some tissues and alcohol based handwash. These can be used to wipe down surfaces before you touch them.
  • Avoid large gatherings of people you do not know eg. festivals etc.
  • Don’t forget your pets. Ensure they have enough supplies.
Teaching children how to wash and dry properly is vitally important
